Design and Installation
MODERN LANDSCAPE DESIGNLandscape design is usually thought of as having two major parts: hardscape (the nonliving elements, such as pavers and paths and fences) and softscape (the living elements, like flowers and trees).
WHEN DESIGNING A LANDSCAPE, WE NEED TO CONSIDER
- Evaluate the site's existing grade and slope
- Determine the desired grade and slope for the area
- Identify any drainage issues that need to be addressed
- Create a grading plan that incorporates the desired grade and slope, and addresses any drainage issues
Preparing the Site
- Mark the location of the new grade and slope
- Clear and remove any existing vegetation, debris, and hardscaping elements
- Excavate the soil to the appropriate depth and shape to achieve the desired grade and slope
- Use a laser level or transit to ensure the excavation is accurate
- Install drainage pipes, channels, or swales as necessary to ensure proper drainage
- Make sure water can properly flow away from the area
Backfill and Compacting
- Backfill the area with compacted soil, gravel or crushed stone
- Use a plate compactor or hand tamper to compact the backfill material
- Use a laser level or transit to ensure the final grade is accurate
- Use a rake, hoe or sod cutter to smooth out the surface
Planting and Mulching
- Plant grass or other vegetation on the newly graded area
- Add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds
- Monitoring the graded area for erosion, settling or other issues
- Inspecting for any damage or wear and taking action as needed.
